6 weeks since I last visited, and almost all the trees planted on 9 February have been uprooted, with the tree protectors and stakes strewn about the hillside. By coincidence, Midlothian Council are making great progress at cutting down mature trees further down the hill. Just what the planet needs - a bigger car park! There are times I despair of the human race.

You take a mess like this...... And remove the plastic tree protectors, which should have been done 15 years ago, and the trees had grown with the stakes and plastic embedded in them...... And you get this.... Sometimes you can almost hear the trees sigh with relief, said Jamie.....
No thanks to the courier, who failed to send a delivery date, and dumped them on my doorstep while I was on holiday for 2 weeks.
However, a good soak and they seemed to be all right. Heeled in, then planted on 25 March at Lauriston Farm, with the help of 18 volunteers. Instead of crab apple, dog rose and elder, there was oak, hawthorn and silver birch, plus hazel, rowan and blackthorn as expected. All welcome anyway! |
