I've made most of these mistakes at one time or another - but nature is forgiving!
- Prepare a proper planting hole.
- Plant high.
- Inspect the roots and disturb when necessary. (If there is circular, pot-bound growth)
- Don’t amend the soil. (Use soil from the planting area)
- Eliminate air pockets. (Heeling in will do this, as well as helping withstand wind)
- Add mulch. (Clear surrounding vegetation, I find an upturned sod works)
- Water properly until established. (Not often a problem in Scotland!)
- You might want to ask where the tree would like to be planted! (as per the Findhorn garden)
- I generally plant plug saplings out at my allotment for a few years before re-planting.
- Provide support (bamboo canes)
- Plant from October to April
- Protect from wildlife - and remove plastic tree protectors after 4 - 5 years
